The Northern Music Academy has specialized in piano tuition for the last twenty five years, and has trained many, many hundreds of successful piano students. Piano lessons are at the heart of what we do here. We teach piano to beginners of all ages, and to advanced students too. The piano offers amazing scope for learning, with so many styles available – from classic to country, and from rock to rhythm and blues. You can study for exams with ABRSM, Rockschool or Trinity College, learn Jazz Improvisation, work on your GCSE performance or simply play for pleasure – the choice is yours, and the possibilities endless!
We aim to have you quickly playing tunes. However, with your long term interest in mind, our teachers use advanced techniques which they skillfully adapt to suit you and the way you learn. Silent reading, memory training, pattern recognition and more, together with notation and ear training are all employed as appropriate to your needs, with the result that your confidence develops, allowing you to make good progress from the start.
Age Related Learning
Teaching piano to 4 year olds is very different from teaching older children, and teaching adults to play piano is different again. Consequently, we use different methods to target your learning needs effectively, regardless of age. Catering for the youngest piano students is quite specialist, due to the relatively short concentration span at that age, and happily our piano teachers are particularly experienced in this area. We know which methods work best for young beginners, and work together with parents to ensure a good learning environment is provided.
Who Teaches Piano?
We have two main piano tutors, father and daughter team Darrell and Jessica Priestley. Both studied at Leeds College of Music, graduating 24 years apart. Jessica studied here at the Northern Music Academy, starting the Junior Music Course at the age of 4, and enjoys perfect pitch, which she attributes to all the ear training she did here whilst still so young.
What Area do You Serve?
Based in Pontefract, close to both A1 and M62, the Norther Music Academy serves a large surrounding area, including Castleford, Featherstone, Knottingly and Normanton, with Leeds, Wakefield, Goole and Selby all nearby, and much of this area is within around 25 minutes journey time. We also have strong historic links with Leeds College of Music, going back to 1981, and many of our students have successfully taken a music degree at LCM. In addition, we can proudly say that all teachers currently working at the Northern Music Academy graduated at LCM themselves.
